The Strathcarron SC was a small roadster prowling the roads of UK until the end of 2001 when the company was declared bankrupt. For those who loved it and hoped to see it on the roads again, AutoCar has one good news: it make a comeback under a new name and with a new backer.
To be called MMI Avocet it will be a competitor for the Lotus Elise. It will be unveiled at the Autosport International at the NEC next month, and the first car should reach its owner in March.
The new manufacturer, Sussex-based MMI, is a new company fronted by one of Strathcarron’s former backers, Martin Miles. They hope they will sell around 50-60 units a year for a start: “I’m very aware that this is a tough market,” says Miles, “so we have to be very realistic and build steadily.”

The Avocet will be powered by a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder twin-cam Ford engine (and not Triumph motorcycle engine like the Strathcarron), mounted transversely to drive the rear wheels through an end-on five-speed gearbox. The first models will have a maximum power of 150 hp, but Miles will soon offer a faster-revving 225bhp normally aspirated version. This will make the 0 to 60 mph sprint in just 5 seconds and will hit a top speed of 150 mph. Prices will be below £30,000.
