2008 Ford Focus RS WRC

Posted by galardo  Published in Ford

Ford has unveiled its new look 2008 Focus RS World Rally Car at the Autosport International Show in Birmingham.

Whilst it still retains the previous generation body styling rather than the stunning 2009 facelifted Focus design, fans can still rejoice in the knowledge that beneath the livery lies the foundation of the highly anticipated Ford Focus RS.

The squad will be named the BP Ford Abu Dhabi World Rally Team for 2008, with Mikko Hirvonen and Jari-Matti Latvala forming the driver line-up.

This is also their first full season in partnership with BP and the Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority, reflected in the team’s new name and their prominence on the car.

Very Fast 300C SRT8

Posted by galardo  Published in Other

This dude I know went out and bought a 2008 Chrysler 300C SRT8. It is the best and most beautiful car in the world, and it cost him $80,000 for all the modifications he had done. He takes it out for a spin and, while doing so, stops for a red light.
An old man on a moped, both looking about 90 years old, pulls up next to him. The old man looks over the sleek, shiny surface of the car and asks, “What kind of car ya got there, sonny?”

The dude replies “A 2008 Chrysler 300C SRT8. it cost $80,000.”

“That’s a lotta money!” says the old man, shocked. “Why does it cost so much?”

“Cause this car can do up to 170 miles an hour!” states the cool dude proudly.

The old man asks “Can I take a look inside?”

“Sure” replies the owner.

So the old man pokes his head in the window and looks around. Leaning back on his moped, the old man says “That’s a pretty nice car, alright!”

Just then the light changes, so the guy decides to show the old man what his car can do. He floors it, and within 30 seconds the speedometer reads 170.

Suddenly, the guy notices a dot in his rear view mirror. It seems to be getting closer! Suddenly, Whhhoooooooooossssshhhhhh! Something whips by him, going 2, maybe 3 times as fast!

The guy wonders, “What on earth could be going faster than my Chrysler 300C SRT8?” Then, ahead of him, he sees a dot coming toward him. Whooooooooooosh! Goes by again! And it almost looked like the old man on the moped! “Couldn’t be,” thinks the guy. How could a moped outrun a Chrysler 300C SRT8?

Again, he sees a dot in his rear view mirror!

WhoooooooshhhhhhhhKa-BbbbblaMMMMM! It plows into the back of his car, demolishing the rear end. The guy jumps out and it is the old man! Of course, the moped and the old man are hurt for certain. The guy runs up to the injured old man and asks “You’re hurt bad! Is there anything I can do for you?”

The old man replies “Yeah. Unhook my suspenders from your side view mirror!”

Ask MF: JCW GP or R56 w/JCW Engine Kit

Posted by galardo  Published in Other

It’s “Ask MF Week” here at MotoringFile. We’re clearing out some of the better questions we’ve gotten recently from the queue and bringing them to you every day this week. First up, Mike asks:

I wanted to get your thoughts on something.  I’m torn between a R56 with the JCW suspension and engine kit and a GP.  Obviously the R56 has a back seat along with probably being more civil but I just can’t seem to get my old R53 out of my head with its seductive supercharger whine and the burble from the Remus exhaust I had on it.  From a fun to drive perspective and also a speed perspective which one has the edge?

Great question Mike. In the R56 (dealer installed) JCW kit you have a newer, faster car with arguably more speed, equal cornering ability (w/the highly recommended JCW suspension) and countless refinements that make it hands down a better car in most situations. On the other hand you have the GP, a car with no back seat, half the sound deadening material and a rear wing that might as well be giving passing police the finger.

From a purely fun to drive perspective it’s hard to argue with the 2006 JCW GP. While it’s true an R56 w/the dealer installed JCW Engine Kit and Suspension Kit will perform as good if not better than the GP in almost any circumstance, for those that like the raucous character of the R53, the GP is probably the better choice.

For those who want the sheer speed and handling yet don’t want to be reminded of the “go fast” attitude constantly and (heaven forbid) actually want to spec things like a sunroof, the R56 w/the JCW Engine Kit and Suspension kit is the hands-down choice.

Of course this question could get quite a bit more interesting with the introduction of the factory John Cooper Works car this summer. Look for a full comparison test of these two cars later in 2008 after the new JCW factory car is released.

Posted by galardo  Published in Other

Anthony Kodack
Filed in: Harley-Davidson | Daytona Bike Week

Harley-Davidson female enthusiasts are encouraged to enter for a chance to win a spot on the Harley-Davidson Women’s Day Ride, held March 4, 2008, and join Karen Davidson, great-granddaughter of one of the Company’s founders, as well as the six Get Down to Daytona contest winners on the last leg of their ride into Daytona.

To enter, women riders should go to www.harley-davidson.com/womensride by Jan. 23 and fill out a short entry form. There is no purchase necessary, but women are encouraged to raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) Summer Camps (a small donation of $25 or more is greatly appreciated). Women riders must ride a Harley-Davidson or Buell motorcycle and must be in Daytona on the morning of March 4.

On Jan. 25, 80 women will be randomly chosen to participate in the ride. Each rider will receive a 2008 MDA Pin, a special flag with MDA and H-D logo for their bike, and be entered in a special MDA drawing for a Harley-Davidson women’s jacket. The top three fundraisers will also receive a special gift.

Daytona Bike Week Women’s Activities

Tuesday, March 4, is Harley-Davidson Women’s Day at the Ocean Center. The Women’s Day Ride will arrive at the Ocean Center at approximately 10 a.m. Upon arrival, Karen Davidson will introduce the six winners of the Get Down to Daytona contest. Interactive seminars will be given throughout the day on how to pick up a motorcycle, customization and MotorClothes. More details will be announced in the next few weeks.

At the Daytona International Speedway Wednesday, March 5, from 4:30 p.m. – 6 p.m., there will be women-only demo rides on select 2008 Harley-Davidson and Buell motorcycles. Demos are free, but riders will need to bring a helmet (full-face helmet and long pants for Buell demos) and a valid motorcycle license. Each woman who takes a demo ride during that time will be automatically entered into a drawing for a women’s helmet. Men who come along with the women who participate in this special demo time will have the opportunity to attend a customization seminar and Q&A session with a Harley-Davidson factory technician.

All week at the Ocean Center, March 2-8 from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., women can visit the Harley-Davidson Interactive Women’s Area featuring giveaways and prizes, motorcycle information, and a historical and informational women’s display.

About the Get Down to Daytona Contest

The six winners in the Harley-Davidson Get Down to Daytona contest were announced Dec. 12, 2007, and were chosen from more than 200 women who submitted videos about their motorcycle mentor. Each winner will receive an expense paid road trip for two from Atlanta to Daytona Bike Week ’08 alongside Karen Davidson, great-granddaughter of one of the Company’s founders, as well as a three nights stay in Daytona.

The six winners are: Carol Dicicco from Chalfont, Pa.; Tonya Lamia from Rockford, Ill.; Kimberly Ryon from Harford, Pa.; Shelli Strand from Birch Run, Mich.; Jennifer Thorne from Mt. Pleasant, Pa.; and Teresa Weston from Hermitage, Tenn.

For more information and to watch the six winners’ videos, visit www.harley-davidson.com/womensride. Check back later this month for full profiles on each woman, as well as in March for coverage from their anxiously awaited trip to Daytona Bike Week ’08.

Is GM Car Czar Maximum Bob Lutz Finally Right?

Posted by galardo  Published in Other

Bob Lutz sounded the alarm before, during and after Congress passed new Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards. The cost of compliance will add thousands to the prices of new cars and trucks! Investor's Business Daily (via CNNMoney) reckons he's right. They predict that the cost of satisfying the regulators will drive-up the price of new vehicles by an average of $6K or 21.4 percent. And that means unintended consequences. "The higher prices of cars will encourage consumers to keep their older, dirtier but cheaper vehicles for much longer. So the actual benefits will be less than forecast." The paper's eds pronounce Maximum Bob a presumptive prognosticator. "The new CAFE standards, as Lutz suggests, amount to a tax– a rather narrow and inefficient one that will neither reduce our reliance on foreign oil nor curb global warming." Bob Lutz, GM's canary in a coal mine. Of course, that doesn't actually change anything…

Jeep Renegade Concept - 2008 Detroit Auto Show

Jeep Renegade Concept - 2008 Detroit Auto Show

Using the same 200 kW electric motor as the Dodge ZEO concept, the renegade has a 64km range powered by lithium ion batteries.

The Renegade concept is slightly unique as it uses a pair of the 200kW electric engines, one on each axle to create a true 4X4.

The Renegade also has low gear mode and a locking differentials. Backing up the two electric engines is a Bluetec diesel “range-extender” engine that together with the electric motors gives it a remarkable fuel economy of 2.14L/100km.

Report: Nissan leaning toward Infiniti Q revival

Posted by galardo  Published in Nissan, Infiniti

Nissan's premium Infiniti brand remains without a flagship model following the demise of the Q45 in 2006. The full-size car was positioned against the BMW 7-Series and Mercedes S-Class. While Nissan's top executives are undecided on building a new Q, Nissan boss Carlos Ghosn is said to be warming up to the idea.

While the CEO is still "not convinced" Infiniti needs a new 7-Series-fighter, Mark Igo, Infiniti North America vice president and general manager, told Automotive News he thinks Ghosn is starting to "feel pretty good about it."

Mr. Igo said he is certain a new Q would help boost Infiniti's image, so he — along with many dealers — is pushing the company for a new range-topper.

Toyota Camry TRD - 2008 Detroit Auto Show

Toyota Camry TRD - 2008 Detroit Auto Show

Toyota Racing & Development has its way with the humble Toyota Camry.

The end result is basically bigger wheels, leather seats and a sunroof with no power increase. A bit of a disappointment for a car with a TRD badge.

On another note Toyota and Microsoft seem to be having a bad partnership to lead the way…
