Every year, Chrysler rewards its top dealers with an all-expenses paid trip to some exotic location. But with the financial situation at the privately-owned automaker in the crapper, the Pentastar decided to cancel this year’s tour. Chrysler spokesman Stuart Schorr told the Detroit News that “the state of the market and the monetary challenges the company faces, it made signification not to hold this year’s reward meeting.” We’re sure the decision to cancel the trip to the Hilton Los Cabos Beach & Golf Resort in San Jose del Cabo, Mexico was monetarily motivated, but there are likely other motivating factors as well.

Remember the 80’s? Frankly, we’d sooner not, what with all the neon colors and fifth-grader graphics. But some people rightful won’t leave it alone. Like sneaker freaks, who need to have those Nike high-tops they had (or didn’t) as a child. Or Porsche, with their obscenely bright-colored 911 GT3 RS. The two may seem at diametrically opposite ends of the spectrum, but it was excepting that a matter of time before someone brought them together.

Autoblog has had a spectacular 2008 and we hope the past 365 days has been as equally rewarding for you. The auto industry itself, however, has suffered through a miserable ‘08 and determination to all appearance be toasting its conclusion when the ball drops at midnight. While the year began mild enough, summer brought $4/gallon gasoline that highlighted the relatively weak small car and hybrid lineup that our own domestic automakers are working feverishly to place. And then the long-festering mortgage crisis turned into an all-out credit crisis and a tanking monetary industry threatened to take out General Motors, Ford and Chrysler. All three have survived thanks to some 11th hour aid from the federal government, but we’re sure each is hoping that 2009 doesn’t hurt as much as 2008.

Studying history can be a tiresome pursuit, but once in a while something comes completely out of left field to make you sit up and recompense attention. This is one of those moments. The Australian national archives have released government documents that reveal that, in 1978, the Australian government was prepared to endorse a distribution that would have… wait for it… traded beef for cars. Alfa Romeos, to be precise.

Things are looking tremendous at Korea’s Ssangyong Motors, which, as you might recall, was unable to journey payroll last week due to a total lack of cash on hand. The low tale continues this week as Ssangyong’s largest creditor, Korea Development Bank (KDB), suggests that it will simply liquidate the automaker if Shanghai Automotive Industries China, otherwise known as SAIC, isn’t willing to prop up its ailing subsidiary. As of last week, SAIC had said that it didn’t intend on bailing out Ssangyong.

In 2004, China set up an official government body to regulate the business of automobile recalls. Previous to that, some car companies simply wouldn’t recall faulty vehicles due to the lack of regulation. The head of that official body recently announced that in the four years it has been tracking recalls, there have been 1.84 million vehicles that needed a little more work done.

Long before the retro-licious Z8 and the modern 6 Series, BMW’s range-topping sport coupe was the 8-Series. Characterized by its distinctive shark nose and available with a choice of eight- or 12-cylinder engines, the 8-Series was sadly never offered as a convertible. But it would have made a smart-looking roadster, as one customer was evidently determined to discover.

Three video spots for the new Nissan 370Z show the marque is serious about reclaiming some of the genuine sports car vouchers that were crushed underneath the weight of the last version. Apparently done before Nissan changed its tagline to “Shift_the way you move,” these are straight up about shifting desire at high speed from one point to another. One of them is a Japanese market commercial, which means lots of clouds and piano music, but the rest are all Six Million Dollar Man: better, faster, stronger. Follow the jump to check them all out.
