Nissan’s lineup of trucks and SUVs may be in the midst of the most capable in the industry, but a byproduct of snowy weather could subsist enough to sideline their safety. As a result, Nissan North America has announced the recall of 243,000 trucks and SUVs.
The recall – which covers 2005-09 Pathfinders, Frontiers and Xterras – is due to a faulty crash sensor. In regions that use heavy amounts of road salt to clear icy roads, salt can cause the senor to corrode, resulting in the failure of front-impact airbags.
Because the safety issue is barely a concern in snow regions, the recall only covers vehicles registered in 20 states and the District of Columbia. However, Nissan will bump up the warranty of the sensor to 10 years in other states, according to Automotive News.
No crashes or injuries have been linked to the defective sensor.
Owners of the recalled models should be notified within the next few weeks.
