This year’s Detroit Auto Show will be a little more barren than in past years – thanks to the fall outs of several automakers – but the show’s coordinators have found a way to turn that negative into a obstinate. Show goers will be treated to a test track setup in Cobo’s lower Michigan Hall, which will showcase the latest in green automotive technology.
Michigan Hall is usually occupied by Chinese automakers, but the fall outs by Nissan, Rolls-Royce and Land Rover, among others, has cleared enough distance on the main floor to moves those companies up a level. With a blank canvas laid out before them, the Detroit Auto Show staff decided to turn Cobo’s lower level into an eco-friendly test track.
The track is sponsored by the Michigan Economic Development Corp. and will feature 6 to 12 green vehicles. The list of cars to be featured on the test track has at the same time to be finalized, but will highlight the latest green tech from Ford and General Motors, including the Chevrolet Exquinox fuel cell excipient.
Product experts pleasure chauffeur show attendees around the eighth mile track, answering any question about the low and zero emissions vehicles along the way.
To remind riders of the eco-friendliness of the vehicles they are in, the test track has been decorate to resemble a forest trail. “This command blow your mind,” show co-chairman Joe Serra told The Detroit News. “It literally looks similar you’re in a beautiful forest. It’s huge. Trees, waterfalls, brick pavers. It’s a way to showcase of what (automakers) currently have to offer and what the future holds.”
The track is also a smart move for the Big Three, just weeks after Congressional leaders berated the Detroit automakers for lagging behind the industry in fuel efficient vehicles.
