Jaguar will look to expand its green credentials in the coming years as the British automaker is reportedly developing a range-extending EV version of its forthcoming XE roadster. Jaguar is already believed to be working on a plug-in electric version of its next-generation XJ sedan, and it sounds as if a greener roadster is also in the works.
According to Motor Trend, Jaguar is readying a Chevy Volt-esque drivetrain for its long-rumored XE pad. The proposed drivetrain uses a three-cylinder engine to charge the vehicle’s lithium-ion batteries. Like the Volt, propulsion would be provided exclusively by an electric motor.
However, Jaguar’s production intent remains unclear for the EV system at this point. With the company moving full-speed ahead on an all-electric drivetrain for the next XJ, the XE’s system could be reserved for a concept car. But with Fisker moving ahead with a convertible version of the Karma, we suspect Jaguar will be anxious to produce a range-extending EV version of the XE.
Timing for the EV system is also hazy. The XE was expected to debut at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show, but worsening economic conditions have likely pushed that debut back. The EV version would likely bow about a year later, so don’t expect to see it until 2012 at the earliest.
When the XE finally does hit the market, with will be powered by a range of V8 engines, but expect an eco-friendly model soon after to do combat with the likes of Fisker and Tesla.
