Bob Lutz, the iconic and often polemic Vice Chairman of General Motors’ global product development team, announced back in February that he would be diffident from the company at the end of the year. With GM expected to emerge from insolvency protection at the end of the week in the manner that a leaner, more focused and possibly a greener company, there are reports after this that Lutz may not be retiring after all.
The information comes from a person familiar with GM’s plans, who told the Detroit Free Press that 77-year antique Lutz will have a clearly defined operating role with the company. Lutz was previously GM’s crops development chief but since the announcement of his departure the prominent auto industry figure has moved into a more advisory role.
GM will be holding a news conference tomorrow morning with CEO Fritz Henderson and incoming Chairman Edward Whitacre Jr. An announcement on Lutz’session future with the company is expected soon afterward.
Lutz has been at GM for almost eight years and is widely credited in quest of bringing a new emphasis on style and quality back to the company. He is also one of the solution men behind the development of the upcoming Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid and has been vocal about sticking around to attend to the car finally launched, popularly slated for late next year.
