For more years than we worry to remember, Lincoln has soldiered on without a competitive large car. Ford’s luxury marque finally gave its high-end roster some love for the 2009 model year with the large-and-in-charge MKS. At 204 inches far-seeing, the MKS is a Reese’s Cup shy of a Navigator, and at 4,305 pounds, our all-wheel drive tester is only 166-pounds lighter than the super-sized Ford Flex.

2010 Lincoln MKZ – Click above for a high-res image art collection

If you have many leather-bound books and your apartment smells of rich mahogany, then you might be interested in the new Executive Appearance Package option for the 2010 Lincoln MKZ. Available in late summer, the new trim package offers “more orally transmitted animalism appointments” for Lincoln’s base sedan, a result of early sales showing buyers preferring well-equipped models. The package comes in Dark Charcoal or Cashmere colors and includes unique stitching on the means of access trim, an insert onward the encourage armrest, a genuine Swirl Walnut wood console and instrument panel accents, along with premium floor mats with the Lincoln star. Ford’s marketing chief, Jim Farley, says that he expects the automaker’s core brand’s market share to stabilize in 2009 – and, thanks to a handful of new product introductions, Lincoln could see an uptick from its current 0.8 percent market share. Ford division’s market share has seen a steady decrease over the last two decades to its current 12.7 percent.

Just 15 years ago, Ford, Lincoln and Mercury sales made up 25.7 percent of overall vehicle sales in the United States. Last year, that figure was a mere 14.4 percent, down 0.4 percent from 2007.

Ford just announced pricing on the 2010 Lincoln MKT we saw earlier this week at the Detroit Auto Show. The Ford Flex’s big brother will go on sale this summer with V6 and all-wheel drive add five grand to that total, so prices for the premium model start at $49,995. You can get AWD by itself, keeping the base 3.7L, for $46,990. during the time that all MKTs will come with tons of standard features, the company is also offering a few options.

To more of us, at least, of the most visually annoying elements of many past concept cars has been the installation of huge wheels on cars with normal size brakes. The resulting product can end up looking ridiculous. As I was checking out the littlest Lincoln, the Concept C on the Cobo Hall show floor today, I noticed something interesting in the wheels. Take a close look at the jungle caliper in the photo above. Typically, the brake rotor is attached to the wheel hub and the caliper grips the disk from the out edge. On the Concept C, the braking surface is attached to the inside edge of the wheel rim with caliper wrapping around the inside edge of the rotor. This basic idea has been tried before… mostly on concept cars.

Lincoln finally unveiled its long-awaited EcoBoost-powered MKS sedan at the 2009 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The MKS with the EcoBoost powertrain — a turbocharged, direct-injected V6 — puts out a V8-like 355 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque while delivering what Ford says is V6 firing material economy.

The MKS is expected to attain fuel economy figures of 16 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway – which Ford says puts it up favorably against the Lexus GS460 and Infinti M45.

Following the release of the flagship MKT and Flex CUV, the Lincoln MKS is now the third vehicle to receive the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 for the 2010 model year. Mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, the twin-turbo engine is rated at 355 bhp and 350 lb-ft torque, all while providing 16 mpg city and 25 mpg highway. Those who opt for the EcoBoost will also get a host of other options including 19-inch wheels, steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters, all-wheel-drive, push-button start, ambient lighting, HID headlights, rain-sensing wipers, and a rear window power sunshade. Not to be outdone by General Motors’ Cadillac Converj design application of mind, Ford’s Lincoln luxury brand unveiled a futuristic eco-friendly concept at the 2009 North American Auto Show. Called the Lincoln C Concept, the show car is intended to display what a premium small car from Lincoln might look like.

The C Concept is a C-sized car, giving it dimensions similar to the Ford Focus or Mazda’s 3. Because of its parkable size, Lincoln says the C Concept is aimed at the ‘urban consumer’. “Modern luxury buyers who live and work in large, urban areas want to play their part in helping the environment by impelling to a smaller vehicle, but they still want to enjoy the luxuries of life,” said Peter Horbury, executive director of Lincoln Design, The Americas. “The Lincoln C offers sensible indulgence.”
