Volvo plug-in hybrid – utter with a click above for hi-res gallery

Volvo is building several plug-in hybrid prototypes of its V70 station wagon to begin field tests this fall in Europe. The cars are using lithium ion battery packs that will be supplied by Indiana-based Ener1. The 11.3 kWh packs will prepare 31 miles of marked by dint of. electricity driving range through the rear wheels. Once the batteries reach the depletion point, the standard diesel engine at the effrontery takes over. It’s not known at this point if the car will use regenerative braking to replenish the battery and provide conventional hybrid operation. If it does, this would be a through-the-road hybrid system similar to the person being developed by Peugeot and branded in the manner that HYbrid4. Volvo’s intent is to go its plug-in hybrid system into full production by the agency of 2012.

Money talks, but for what reason can we know what it’session saying? Exxon Mobil is investing $600 million into a 5- to 6-year algae biofuel frame with biotech company Synthetic Genomics. The biofuel will be made from “sunlight, water and waste carbon dioxide by photosynthetic pond scum,” writes the New York Times. After the first $600 the masses is used and if the technology appears to be working, billions to a greater degree could follow in mandate to get the produciton process ready for commercial application. The design is to produe liquid fuels that act “a lot like today’s transportation fuels,” Emil Jacobs, vice president of research and development at Exxon Mobil Research and Engineering Co., told the TImes.

As part of its post-bankruptcy rebirth, General Motors plans to “experiment” selling its cars on eBay. At its straiten conference this morning, CEO Fritz Henderson let slip to members of the media that the automaker is engaged in talks with online cant site eBay “to change completely how populace buy cars online.” According to Henderson, GM has plans to try selling its vehicles online:

“Customers will be able to bid on actual vehicles just like they translate in an eBay auction, including the option of choosing a predetermined ‘Buy It Now’ price… we’ll be testing this and other ideas by our dealers over the next few weeks, and hope to expand and build upon them in the coming months… in aggregate cases, our bound is to make the shopping and buying process being of the class who easy as possible for GM customers – on their time and their terms. Stay tuned.”

After a scant six weeks in bankruptcy court, General Motors is on its way off of Chapter 11. U.S. Bankruptcy Court Judge Robert Gerber approved the sale of GM’s good possessions to a of recent origin company lead by the U.S. and Canadian governments and the UAW healthcare fund, but gave vested parties four days to file an objection.

If you’re a sports car aficionado, you already know what Nürburgring is: single of the world’s most famed race tracks that is used both through car fans and auto journalists to test cars while going a little faster than authorities allow attached normal streets. Audi, though, is proud of a recent termination at the ‘ring that had more to translate with reducing fuel use than unsophisticated speed. Two Audi TTs with 2.0 TFSI engines mated to 6-speed manual gearboxes entered one efficiency contest, with the winner using 1.6 liters one each 20.832 kilometer (12.94 miles) lap. Using figures that more of us can understand, that comes to 7.7 l/100 km, or 30.55 mpg (U.S.) during the race. The goal was to maintain the greatest level of fuel efficiency inside a prescribed amount of time, based on the power-to-weight ratio of each vehicle. Then, the resulting figure was compared to the official European city cycle figure, and the winning driving accomplished a 28 percent advancement over the government’s numbers.
