Automotive Energy Supply Corporation has kicked off pilot production of lithium ion batteries. For those who have not been paying enough attention, AESC is the joint risk between Nissan and NEC that is developing batteries for electric and hybrid batteries. The first AESC production line is located adjacent to Nissan’s Zama Operations Center in Japan.

There are some seriously mixed messages coming out of the NHTSA today, which perfectly illustrate what I like to call the tyranny of safety. On the one hand, the NHTSA announced today that overall traffic fatalities dropped by nearly ten percent in 2008, hitting the lowest levels per vehicle mile traveled since 1961. Estimates for the first quarter of 2009 show the high-single digit downward trend continuing into this year. In 2008, the NHTSA logged 1.27 fatalities per 100 million vehicle miles traveled. Which, based on the number of cars and the shoddy quality of driving one encounters in this country (sorry, it’s true), is a remarkable statistic. But, for safety nuts like SecTrans Ray LaHood, it’s not enough. “While the number of highway deaths in America has decreased, we still have a long way to go,†he tells his press release. And how are we going to go about protecting Americans from the lowest fatality rates since JFK was elected and the Beatles were still playing the Cavern? Gizmos, baby, gizmos.

Automakers expressed more optimism about the U.S. car market despite the fact that overall sales in June fell by 28 percent compared with a year ago, to 859,420 vehicles. That represents only a slight improvement in year-ago comparisons over results for the first five months of this year.
Jesse Toprak, executive director of Industry Analysis for Edmunds.com, characterized the month cautiously. "It means, if nothing else, that things are not acquirement any worse, notwithstanding things are not getting that much better, either. There was a lot of volatility, bound there were signs of life."

I love technology. I was an early adopter of the microcomputer (8†SS/SD floppies, anyone?). I spent way too much on a TI calculator in college because it could *gasp* do square roots. My car has rain-sensing wipers, self-leveling headlights and power headrests. However, spending a week with an Infiniti FX35 made me wonder if, just as electronic calculators have given us a generation who can’t do simple math in their heads, the technical fripperies in our cars are going to produce a generation of drivers who can’t drive.

Infiniti’s aiming to make a big splash with its foray into the European market, but it’s going to be an uphill battle against the continent’s established native luxury brands. That’s why the premium Nissan brand has teamed up with one of Europe’s most renowned names in luxury products, Louis Vuitton, to produce a new concept car to be unveiled at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show.

DETROIT – Chrysler and Nissan have put on hold their proposed arrangement to build vehicles for each other as they each evaluate their deteriorating financial situations in a worsening global economy and historically dismal car market.
The sum of two units companies had announced last spring that Chrysler would build a Dodge Ram-based replacement for the Nissan Titan 
while Nissan would provide Chrysler with Nissan-based small cars, one of which would be sold as the Dodge Hornet.
The on-hold project raises questions about Chrysler's ability to move forward with a partner and Nissan's product plans for North America.
