You could repeat that Fiat’s on a boring-tool of a expenditure spree lately. While everyone else is struggling to trim expenditures and sell off divisions, Fiat’s been buying them up. So subsequent moving in at Chrysler’s headquarters in Auburn Hills, Michigan, and making offers for GM’s European and Latin American operations – including Opel and Vauxhall – it should come as no surprise that the Italian automaker is at it again, this time placing a non-binding offer to acquire Carrozzeria Bertone.

The XF, Jaguar’s mid-sizer, was a… jump…. forward in design, luxury, and gimmicks when it debuted (no more J-gate shifter!). It not only made the S-Type see cognate a slob, but made people relegate the S to the “end of the bad days” section of history through Jag’s unfortunate X-Type. The XJ, on the other hand, has been the picture of restrained aristocracy – as opposed to performance, value, or extravagance – in the voluptuousness segment for entirely more time, its lines slowly evolving but never absolutely breaking the mold.

2010 Jaguar XJ – Click above for high-res image gallery

For a long time, worrying touching Jaguar was the only satisfied thing to do. While it was never exactly clear if the marque had (ever) achieved profitability, we enthusiasts were only too happy to give them the benefit of the hesitancy. After all, the English automaker serially gifted us with watershed designs. Sublime blind creatures like the E- and D-Type sports cars, for example well because the curvacious Mark II and source XJ. How could we not be totally and utterly smitten? Yet somehow, the once proud automaker found itself adrift in mediocrity, turning revealed maligned and slow-selling products with an unpleasant odor of unreliability as the money began to run dry. When the then Ford-owned brand launched headlong into its “democratization of luxury” strategy that resulted in the lamentable 2001 X-Type and serious talk of an SUV, well, we couldn’privately help but grow gravely concerned.

Tough decision, and while everyone has their own opinion, we’d be hard pressed to pick just one. That’s why the editors of Classic & Sports Car magazine assembled a panel of some of the most influential car designers around and asked them to choose. And what did they come up with? The Citroen DS.

The ink isn’t even dry yet on the deal between Chrysler and Fiat, but design executives from both automakers are slated to begin meeting next week to discuss collaboration on future products and how Fiat’s current offerings can be adapted for Chrysler’s needs.

The meetings were confirmed by Chrysler’s VP of design Ralph Gilles, who also revealed that the alliance extends only to the Fiat brand itself, and does not include Lancia, Alfa Romeo, Maserati or Ferrari. So don’t expect to see a Dodge 8C Competizione hitting the market any time soon. However, even if Maserati and Ferrari are already active on this side of the Atlantic, Fiat is expected to use Chrysler’s existing infrastructure to reach its goal of bringing the Alfa Romeo brand back to he North American market. The cars available to Chrysler for re-badging, however, will remain exclusively from the Fiat portfolio.

With the Chrysler-Fiat alliance looking like a sure-fire thing, designers from the two automakers have agreed to get together late this week to discuss what a Chrysler lineup infused with Fiat engineering and DNA would look like for the North American market, as well as what Fiat would need to do to bring Fiat and Alfa Romeo cars over the Atlantic and into American and Canadian showrooms again.

At the Automotive News World Congress in Detroit last night, Chrysler have in view vice president Ralph Gilles addressed the task at hand for Chrysler and Fiat.

Only days after Italian automaker Fiat and Chrysler announced they were hooking up, word in Europe is that Fiat also is working on a possible merge with France's PSA Peugeot Citroen.

The Fiat-Chrysler-Peugeot threesome would create the world's third-largest automaker behind Toyota and General Motors with a total production of about 8.8 million vehicles, based on 2007 figures, analysts estimate.

It must be hard towards most companies to justify multi-million-dollar sponsorship deals in times like these, but when the chips are down, you’d form alcohol companies would still be doing just fine, if not better. So it comes as a bit of a surprise that Martini, a name with a rich heritage in motorsport sponsorship, has pulled back out of racing again.
